Malaysia’s Petronas and Vietnam National Industry – Energy Group, known as Petrovietnam, have signed a strategic alliance agreement covering LNG infrastructure, upstream development and low-carbon energy. According to Offshore Energy, the pact is intended to strengthen Vietnam’s energy security while broadening cooperation between the two companies across the regional energy sector.

The agreement was signed at Petrovietnam’s headquarters by Petronas president and group chief executive Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik and Petrovietnam president and chief executive Le Manh Cuong. It sets out a framework for the companies to combine their capabilities and explore opportunities along the energy value chain. Its scope encompasses oil and gas development, gas and LNG, downstream activities and lower-carbon solutions, rather than focusing on a single part of the business.

Offshore Energy reported that expanding Vietnam’s LNG infrastructure is among the alliance’s objectives, alongside supporting the country’s longer-term development and advancing low-carbon solutions across the region. The agreement is presented as a further step in a partnership spanning 35 years, with energy security, sustainability and long-term value among the companies’ stated priorities. The report does not specify investment commitments, individual projects or delivery schedules under the new framework.

Petronas’ involvement in Vietnam dates to 1991, when it first invested in the country’s upstream sector. Offshore Energy described the Malaysian company as one of the pioneering international investors in Vietnam’s oil and gas industry. The new alliance therefore extends a relationship rooted in upstream investment into a broader set of energy activities.

The companies’ cooperation also reaches beyond Vietnam through a three-country renewable energy initiative involving Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. Within that initiative, Malaysia acts as both a transit hub for electricity and a demand centre, while Singapore is also a key demand centre. Petronas said it remained committed to meeting Vietnam’s changing energy needs with Petrovietnam while pursuing wider regional cooperation.
